How it works · Bone health
Bone is being lost

In osteoporosis, osteoclasts break down bone faster than osteoblasts can rebuild it.

What it’s used for

Osteoporosis in women and men, and steroid-related bone loss.

How it works

It slows the osteoclasts that break down bone, letting bone-building catch up.

How it’s taken

A tablet once a week, first thing in the morning with a full glass of plain water. Stay upright and wait 30 minutes before food or other medicines.

Side effects

Heartburn and esophageal irritation if not taken correctly. Rarely, jaw bone problems or unusual thigh fractures after long use.

Monitoring

Bone density every 1 to 2 years, plus calcium and vitamin D levels.

Good to know

After 3 to 5 years your doctor may suggest a drug holiday based on your fracture risk.
