Why it matters

People with inflammatory arthritis have higher rates of heart disease, and extra weight puts load on joints and blunts the response to some medicines.

What you can do

A Mediterranean-style pattern works well: vegetables, fruit, whole grains, beans, nuts, olive oil and fish twice a week. Limit ultra-processed foods, sugary drinks and excess red meat. For gout, also limit beer, liquor and organ meats.

Call your care team if
