How it works · Vasculitis
Blood flows freely

Healthy blood vessels have smooth, flexible walls and an open channel.

What it is

MPA inflames small blood vessels without forming granulomas. Kidney inflammation (glomerulonephritis) is very common and can progress quickly, and lung bleeding or scarring can occur.

Symptoms

Fatigue, fever, weight loss, joint and muscle aches, rash, numbness or weakness in the hands or feet, cough or shortness of breath, and blood or protein in the urine.

How it’s diagnosed

MPO-ANCA is usually positive. Urine tests, kidney function, chest imaging and kidney biopsy confirm the diagnosis and its severity.

Treatment

Rituximab or cyclophosphamide with steroids induces remission, and avacopan can lower steroid exposure. Maintenance therapy reduces relapse risk.

Living with it

Keep up regular lab checks even when you feel well. Protect your kidneys by controlling blood pressure and avoiding NSAIDs unless your doctor approves.
